Joe Henson Bursary

Three Counties Agricultural Society Bursary in Memory of Joe Henson MBE supports those within the three counties of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire venturing into further education in agriculture or related subjects.  The bursary supports up to three years of study, with up to £1,000 per annum provided each year.

Joe was a highly regarded member of the Three Counties Agricultural Society and it was his vision and passion for Rare Breeds that sees us champion them as a core part of our Royal Three Counties Show today. In tribute to Joe’s fantastic work, we are thrilled to have a bursary in his memory.

Some of our past beneficiaries share there experiences:

Emily Jones
My name is Emily Jones, I’m 21 and from Herefordshire. I was awarded the Three Counties Agricultural Society Bursary in Memory of Joe Henson MBE in September 2017 to support my time studying at Harper Adams. The society has supported three years of my degree in BSc (Hons) Agri-Business, to which I’m extremely grateful.

The bursary has first and foremost provided important financial support for my studies, but it has also delivered an important educational experience and many networking opportunities. In December 2018, the Three Counties Agricultural Society kindly invited me to a reception celebrating 60 years at the Three Counties Showground, where I had the pleasure of meeting HRH Princess Anne. This event and the opportunity to meet HRH is something that I’m confident will stay with me for many years to come.

Harry Morris
The Joe Henson MBE Bursary has been a great help to me since I started studying BSc (Hons) Agriculture with Crop Management at Harper Adams University in 2018.

When I started university, the bursary enabled me to purchase a much-needed laptop and as well as some essential books such as the John Nix Pocketbook for Farm Management and Lockhart and Wiseman’s Crop Husbandry.

The most important contribution the bursary has made to me is that it has enabled me to complete a wide range of professional qualifications including the PA1, PA2, PA4 G+S pesticide application certificates. I have also completed my Fork Lift Truck Operations (Telehandler) Certificate. I would not have been able to afford to do these qualifications without the bursary. The qualifications have significantly increased my employability, and this contributed to being able to get a placement job at Beeswax Dyson Farming Ltd in Lincolnshire from this summer. The bursary also has also enabled me to join the National Register of Sprayer Operators. This gives me the chance to earn continuous professional development points and further increase my employability.

Lucy Morgan
I received the Three Counties Agricultural Bursary in memory of Joe Henson for 2019/2020.

Not only was it an honour to receive a bursary in memory of someone so iconic in the farming industry but the bursary has aided me to achieve my full potential in my final year of university. As a final year Rural Enterprise and Land Management student I am studying a range of modules including Integrated Countryside Management, Agricultural Tenancy Law and Revenue Law and Statutory Valuation. I still can’t quite believe that my four years at Harper Adams University are now nearing the end; what a journey it has been!

The bursary has allowed me to renew my Student Central Association of Agricultural Valuers membership, which is important as this organisation provides access to their published books and research, and purchase textbooks for wider reading.

Once graduated, after one further year in work I will be able to undertake my RICS and CAAV exams and be a fully qualified chartered surveyor. I am also passionate about the Zwartble breed and once lambing has finished, I aim to expand my flock to include pedigree ewes so I can show my flock and move to breeding pure breed Zwartbles. The scholarship has enabled me to do this by ensuring that my savings do not have to be spent on student life.
